In this blog we are going to tell you about Difference Between Tropical and Temperate Grassland, so read this blog carefully to get the complete information.
A large area of land dominated by grasses and small shrubs is generally known as grassland. Due to quite irregular rainfall in grassland, it prevents the growth of the larger forest. Even though grasslands across the world may look the same, they are considerably different.
On Earth there are two types of grasslands found – tropical grassland and temperate grassland. The Tropical grassland experiences less significant temperature variation whereas greater temperature variation is suffered by the temperate grasslands.

About Tropical Grassland
The tropical grasslands are also known as savannas and are located around the tropical regions of the earth. Savanna grasslands cover half of Africa, a substantial part of Australia, and South America. The tropical grasslands feature large open spaces with scattered little vegetation and a few big trees.
The temperature in the Tropical Grassland lies between 78 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit in summer and from 68 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter.
About Temperate Grassland
The temperate grasslands are commonly open areas of grassy plains which are mostly devoid of large trees. Grasslands have many names depending on the place they are located in Eurasia they are called stepped, pampas in Argentine, and prairies in North America.
In temperate grasslands, the temperature in winter can drop below zero and it can reach 90 degrees Fahrenheit in summer.
Major Difference Between Tropical and temperate grassland
The following are the major difference between tropical and temperate grassland:
- The tropical grasslands are also known as savannas and are located around the tropical regions of the earth which include South America, Australia, and Africa. While the temperate grasslands are located in regions North and South of the equator including Australia, Argentina, and Central North America.
- In the Tropical Grassland, the climate is primarily warmer and varies according to the season. The wet season and dry season are found in the Tropical Grassland whereas the temperate grasslands experience a climate that is characterized by various hot and cold seasons.
- The temperature in the Tropical Grassland does not differ too much and lies between 78 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit in summer and from 68 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter while in temperate grasslands the temperature in winter differs significantly and can drop below zero however it can reach 90 degrees Fahrenheit in summer.
- In Tropical Grassland there is high precipitation as wet seasons experience heavy rainfall and the dry season experiences very little rainfall. Whereas temperate grasslands experience low precipitation as it receives less rainfall in comparison to Tropical Grassland.
- Due to the high iron content in the Tropical Grassland the soil is not very fertile and slightly reddish while in the temperate less precipitation it enables the aggregation of nutrients in the soil which makes the soil more fertile and manages to be darker in color.
- Due to high rainfall, the vegetation in the Tropical Grassland consists of tall coarse grass. Whereas due to less rainfall in the temperate grasslands the vegetation incorporates short, more nutritious grass with a few trees.
- Some of the commonly grown plants in the tropical Grassland are wild indigos, perennial grasses buffalo grass, sunflower, sagebrush, cacti, and cloves where are some of the commonly grown plants in the temperate grasslands are star grass, lemongrass, red oat grass, and Rhodes grass.
- Some of the animals found in the Tropical Grassland are Hyena, Antelope, lion, giraffe, zebra elephant, etc while some of the animals found in the temperate grassland are deer, bison, kangaroo, Pronghorn, etc.
