What exactly is Hellish Rebuke?

Hellish Rebuke is a reaction spell, which means it can only be cast if the response condition is satisfied. When an opponent within 60 feet of you is damaged, the caster can use their response to envelop the target in searing flames, causing fire damage.

The spell forces the adversary to make a Dexterity saving and deals half damage if the save is successful.

Who has the ability to cast Hellish Rebuke?

In 5e, warlocks are the only ones that have Hellish Rebuke in their spell list by default. When Oathbreaker Paladins achieve level 3, they gain Hellish Rebuke to their extended spell repertoire. If a bard uses its Magical Secrets feature, it can cast Hellish Rebuke.

Tieflings of the Asmodeus Bloodline can cast Hellish Rebuke at the second level utilizing their Infernal Legacy.

When and where should I use Hellish Repudiation?

Pact of the Blade Warlocks will find it easier to avoid Hellish Rebukes because employing their Pact Weapon puts them in a melee range of opponents.

Hellish Rebuke has no area of effect, thus aside from creatures who are resistant — such as Fire Elementals — there isn’t really a bad moment to cast it.

Why should I take Hellish Revenge?

Hellish Rebuke is a reaction spell that creates a strong additional wall, preventing the Warlock, who can be a squishier caster at times, from becoming an easy target for enemies.

How often may Tieflings use Hellish Rebuke?

Tieflings of the Bloodline of Asmodeus can use Hellish Rebuke without spending a spell slot once every long rest. This cast will be handled as if it were cast at the second level at all times.

Can Hellish Rebuke Be Repulsed?

Yes. Hellish Rebuke, like Counterspell, is a response, and there is no rule that says a reaction’s trigger can’t be someone else’s reaction. As a result, Hellish Rebuke can be countered.

Can you use Hellish Rebuke this turn?

Yes, if the trigger condition is satisfied. If someone uses a damaging response, you can certainly cast Hellish Rebuke on your turn.

Does Hellish Rebuke cast Hex?

No. Hex only activates actions that require the player to make an attack roll, whether with a weapon or a spell. Hellish Rebuke demands the target to save rather than attack. It has no effect on Hex’s damage.

Rulings

7/23/2021 – If a permanent’s controller cannot sacrifice it when the triggered ability granted by Hellish Rebuke resolves, they will still lose 2 life. Similarly, even if they cannot lose a life, they will sacrifice their permanent.

7/23/2021 – Permanents will receive numerous occurrences of the triggered ability if a player casts more than one Hellish Rebuke in a round. Each will be triggered and resolved independently. For example, if you cast Hellish Rebuke twice, the controller of each permanent that injured you will lose 4 life.

7/23/2021 – If several players cast Hellish Rebuke in the same turn, some permanents will get multiple instances of the triggered ability that relate to separate players. Each will only be triggered by the player who used the Hellish Rebuke that awarded it the ability.

7/23/2021 – Copies of Hellish Rebuke that were not cast will grant opponents the ability, but that ability will be useless because no one cast that copy of Hellish Rebuke.
