Subsistence farming is a type of farming in which all the crops and livestock grown are used by the farmer and his family to maintain their livelihood and if any surplus occurs then that is used for trade. The main name of subsistence farming is to ensure self-sufficiency and reduction of poverty and hunger. In other words, this form of farming is done for personal consumption. Subsistence farming and commercial farming are the two main forms of agriculture practice performed depending on the demand for produce, geographical conditions, level of technology, and labor.
The two types of Subsistence farming are; Primitive subsistence farming and Intensive subsistence farming.
What is Primitive Subsistence farming?
Primitive subsistence farming is a type of agriculture practice that is used to meet the needs of farmers’ families. This farming practice is very basic and does not involve the use of modern technology. Due to the use of rudimentary practices, the resulting output is hardly enough to meet the necessity of the particular cultivator and his family. Two examples of primitive subsistence farming are shifting cultivation and nomadic herding.
What is Intensive Subsistence farming?
Intensive subsistence farming is a type of agriculture practice performed in areas of high population pressure on land. This form of farming involves the use of modern machinery and artificial irrigation methods are performed. For obtaining higher production high doses of biochemical inputs and irrigation are used in intensive subsistence farming. These higher production high doses include insecticides, High Yielding Variety seeds, Chemical Fertilizers, and pesticides.
The Major Difference Between Primitive and Intensive Subsistence Farming
The following are the main differences between primitive subsistence farming and intensive subsistence farming:
- Primitive Subsistence farming is one of the earliest methods of farming to be trained as it uses primitive tools and is carried out on a small scale without any modern technology whereas intensive subsistence farming is a type of farming where the farmers grow crops on a small plot of land using simple tools and more labor.
- Primitive subsistence farming is done to fulfill the basic requirements of the farmer and their family while intensive farming is performed to sell the crops to earn profit.
- The crops grown in primitive subsistence farming include potato, maize, yam, and cassava; however in intensive subsistence farming crops such as wheat, pulses rice, maize, and oilseeds are grown.
- Primitive subsistence farming is a type of farming that is prominently performed in the thickly populated areas of the monsoon regions of southeast, south, and East Asia while intensive subsistence farming is prominently performed in the thickly forested areas of the Amazon basin, parts of Southeast Asia, tropical Africa, and NorthEast India.
